Helping People Change

Sir Francis Bacon said, “If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts, but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties.”

If you want to help someone improve and reach their potential, consider dropping your doubts about that person. What if you embraced the possibility that they might change and achieve far more than what you have been expecting? What if you chose to doubt your doubts and conclusions?

How you perceive a person affects your influence in their lives. Who do you need to be to be the best influence in their lives? How would the situation be affected if you chose to be ok with not being in control, dropped your expectations, and embraced the possibility that they might step up and change?

When you conclude that someone will never get better, your positive influence ends. However, if you drop your judgment and open to possibilities, you create an opportunity to help others improve.

Is it possible that you have hindered someone’s progress by doubting they will ever improve? How might you be better positioned to help them if you dropped your judgement and opened yourself to the possibility that they can change and improve?
